Relationships between the AE , ap and Dst indices near solar minimum ( 1974 ) and at solar maximum ( 1979 )

چکیده
Three-hourly average values of the Dst, AE and ap geomagnetic activity indices have been studied for 1 year's duration near the solar minimum (1974) and also at the solar maximum (1979). In 1979 seven intense geomagnetic storms (Dst <A100 nT) occurred, whereas in 1974 only three were reported. This study reveals: (1) the yearly average of AE is greater in 1974 than in 1979, whereas the inverse seems to be true for the yearly average of Dst, when a higher number of intense storms is present. These averages indicate the kind of activity occurring on the sun as shown in earlier work. (2) The seasonal variation of Dst is higher than that of ap and is almost negligible in AE. (3) The correlation coecient of ap´AE is in general the highest, as the magneto-meters that monitor both indices are close, and is surpassed only by the ap´Dst correlation during geomagnetic storms, when the in¯uence of the ring current is dominant. The correlation of ap´Dst also shows a seasonal variability. (4) For the ®rst time a study of correlation between ap and a linear combination of AE and Dst has also been made. We found higher correlation coecients in this case as compared to those between ap´Dst and ap´AE.

Ring current in ̄uence on auroral electrojet predictions
Geomagnetic storms and substorms develop under strong control of the solar wind. This is demonstrated by the fact that the geomagnetic activity indices Dst and AE can be predicted from the solar wind alone. A consequence of the strong control by a common source is that substorm and storm indices tend to be highly correlated. However, a part of this correlation is likely to be an eect of intern...

Predicting future behavior of chaotic time series system is a challenging area in the literature of nonlinear systems. The prediction's accuracy of chaotic time series is extremely dependent on the model and the learning algorithm. On the other hand the cyclic solar activity as one of the natural chaotic systems has significant effects on earth, climate, satellites and space missions. Several m...
متن کاملIonospheric and geomagnetic responses to changes in IMF BZ: a superposed epoch study
Superposed epoch studies have been carried out in order to determine the ionospheric response at mid-latitudes to southward turnings of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). This is compared with the geomagnetic response, as seen in the indices Kp, AE and Dst. The solar wind, IMF and geomagnetic data used were hourly averages from the years 1967–1989 and thus cover a full 22-year cycle in th...
متن کاملResponse of the auroral electrojets to the solar wind modeled with neural networks
The dissipative processes in the Earth’s magnetosphere, such as the ring current and the auroral electrojets, depend on both the external solar wind forcing and factors internal to the magnetosphere. Previous studies have shown that artificial neural networks are able to compute the ring current index Dst very accurately from only solar wind data. In this study, we use neural networks to model ...
متن کاملA combined solar and geomagnetic index for thermospheric climate
Infrared radiation from nitric oxide (NO) at 5.3 µm is a primary mechanism by which the thermosphere cools to space. The Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) instrument on the NASA Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics satellite has been measuring thermospheric cooling by NO for over 13 years. In this letter we show that the SABER time seri...
